The Old Man and The Sea ~ Ernest Hemingway

The Old Man and The Sea

About The Author:-

American novelist, and short story writer Ernest Hemingway was also a journalist. He was raised in a household of six and was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois.

After finishing high school, Hemingway worked as a journalist for The Kansas City Star because of his restless nature.

He worked as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in Italy during World War I. His work was significantly influenced by this event and his later newspaper reporting on the conflict. "The Sun Also Rises" (1926) was his first significant novel. The majority of Hemingway's writing was created between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s. He wrote "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1952, about a valiant, lonesome figure, and earned the Nobel Prize of 1954 for literature.

The Old Man and The Sea:-

It is said – “To be long in the tooth!”

This expression indicates that somebody is too old to do something.

Again it is said that “ … The gray hair of experience is the splendor of the old.”

It means the main advantage of age is wisdom – the longer one survives, the more experience and knowledge one can gain.

The novel ‘Old Man and The Sea’ is generally a contrast in between these two expressions, the story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life.

For eighty-four days, Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned empty-handed. He has already been proclaimed as “Salao” (Extremely Unlucky). So, conspicuously unlucky is he that the parents of his only young, devoted apprentice and friend, Manolin, have been forced to leave him. But Santiago is confident that his unproductive streak will soon come to an end, and he resolves to sail out farther –

So, will he be succeeded, or a tragic end is awaiting? In order to know this, you have to keep your eyes on this novel’s pages……..

Motivational Quotes From This Novel:-

Ø “But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed, but not defeated.”

Ø “Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.”

Ø “Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes, you are ready.”
