He was raised in a household of six and was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois. After finishing high school, Hemingway worked as a journalist for The Kansas City Star because of his restless nature. He worked as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in Italy during World War I. His work was significantly influenced by this event and his later newspaper reporting on the conflict. "The Sun Also Rises" (1926) was his first significant novel. The majority of Hemingway's writing was created between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s. He wrote "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1952, about a valiant, lonesome figure, and earned the Nobel Prize of 1954 for literature.
